Nine years ago I began managing the development of a utility scale wind turbine, many different types of analysis were required, from financial returns to rotor dynamics. After more than a years work we found out that fundamental market forces would prevent adoption (and funding) of our turbine in the USA, even though it had a large technical advantage. Learning of such a large obstacle so late in the game was very a expensive but valuable lesson. Technical chops and hard work are great but business realities must drive the overall strategy.

• An electro-mechanical prototype, complete with advanced logic, a variety of sensors and a silent brushless DC motor control to help a client monetize a patent
• A supply chain in Asia and engineering specifications for products that grossed $3 million dollars in the first year
• A CAN based home sensor system with a display and a variety of regulatory requirements. We also developed a supply chain for this system, which is now in production
• Automated receiving software for incoming inspection at a factory, also developed the required photo-inspection fixture
